Post Nasal Drip: Causes and Homeopathic Treatment Without Surgery

Post nasal drip, throat clearing or night cough? Dr. Ramdeo Lamoria, BHMS explains causes (allergy, sinusitis, polyps, adenoids) and homeopathic treatment.

Post nasal drip homeopathic treatment – woman with throat discomfort from mucus dripping down the throat

Constantly clearing your throat, a feeling of mucus sliding down the back of the throat, a tickly cough that is worse at night and a sore, scratchy throat every morning: these are the classic signs of post nasal drip. It is one of the most common reasons people visit an ENT or homeopathic clinic, and one of the most frustrating, because sprays and antihistamines often bring relief for a few days only. This guide explains what post nasal drip is, its main causes (including allergy, sinusitis, nasal polyps and enlarged adenoids in children), how it is diagnosed, what conventional treatment offers, how homeopathic treatment for post nasal drip is planned, which remedies are commonly considered, and when you should see a doctor without delay.

What is post nasal drip?

The lining of the nose and sinuses produces mucus all the time, normally around one to two litres a day in adults. This mucus traps dust, pollen and germs, keeps the airway moist, and is swept backwards by tiny hair-like cilia so that it is swallowed without us noticing.

Post nasal drip (also written postnasal drip, and called upper airway cough syndrome when it causes a chronic cough) happens when this mucus becomes too much, too thick, or is not cleared properly. Instead of passing unnoticed, it collects and drips down the back of the nose into the throat, where it irritates the sensitive lining and triggers throat clearing and coughing.

Common symptoms of post nasal drip

  • A sensation of mucus running or sticking at the back of the throat
  • Frequent throat clearing and a need to swallow repeatedly
  • A chronic cough, often worse at night or on waking, when mucus pools while lying down
  • Sore, scratchy or irritated throat, especially in the morning
  • Hoarse voice or a feeling of a lump in the throat
  • Bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Blocked nose, sneezing or reduced sense of smell, depending on the cause
  • Nausea or a poor appetite in the morning in some people, from swallowed mucus

Post nasal drip is a symptom rather than a disease in itself. Treating it well therefore depends on finding out why the mucus is being produced or why it is not draining normally.

Root causes of post nasal drip

1. Allergic rhinitis

Allergy to dust mites, pollen, mould, pet dander or seasonal changes is one of the most frequent causes. The nasal lining swells and produces thin, watery mucus, along with sneezing, itching and a runny nose. Many people in India notice symptoms around season changes, after exposure to dust or in air-conditioned rooms. Our detailed guide to homeopathic treatment for allergic rhinitis covers this cause in depth.

2. Chronic sinusitis

When the sinuses stay inflamed for 12 weeks or longer, mucus becomes thick, yellow or green, and drains backwards into the throat. Facial heaviness, headache over the forehead or cheeks, a blocked nose and loss of smell are typical. Repeated colds, untreated allergy and structural blockage all predispose to chronic sinusitis.

3. Nasal polyps and swollen turbinates (“growth of flesh in the nose”)

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, grape-like swellings of the nasal and sinus lining. They usually grow in people with long-standing allergy, chronic sinusitis or asthma. Many patients describe this as “naak mein maans badhna”. Polyps and enlarged turbinates narrow the airway, block normal drainage and keep mucus trapped, leading to a persistent blocked nose, mouth breathing, snoring and post nasal drip.

4. Enlarged adenoids in children

Adenoids are lymph tissue at the back of the nose. In young children they often enlarge after repeated colds and allergy. Large adenoids block the back of the nose, so mucus collects and drips into the throat. Typical signs are mouth breathing, snoring, a nasal voice, a night-time cough, frequent ear infections and restless sleep. Read more in our article on recurrent cold and cough in children.

5. Other common causes

  • Viral colds and flu, where drip settles within two to three weeks
  • Deviated nasal septum, which disturbs airflow and drainage
  • Acid reflux (GERD or laryngopharyngeal reflux), which irritates the throat and causes a similar feeling of mucus
  • Non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis, triggered by cold air, strong smells, smoke or spicy food
  • Dry air, pollution and smoking, which thicken mucus and damage cilia
  • Certain medicines, such as some blood pressure tablets, and overuse of decongestant nasal sprays (rebound congestion)
  • Hormonal changes, for example during pregnancy

How post nasal drip is diagnosed

Diagnosis is mainly clinical. A doctor asks about the type of mucus, timing, triggers, allergy history, past infections and medicines, and examines the nose and throat. A cobblestone appearance at the back of the throat is a common sign. Depending on the case, further tests may be advised:

  • Nasal endoscopy to look for polyps, a deviated septum or pus from the sinuses
  • CT scan of the paranasal sinuses for chronic sinusitis
  • X-ray of the nasopharynx to assess adenoid size in children
  • Allergy tests and blood counts (for example eosinophils or IgE)
  • Assessment for acid reflux if throat symptoms continue without nasal findings

What conventional treatment offers

Conventional treatment focuses on drying or reducing the mucus and calming inflammation: saline rinses, antihistamines, decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, antibiotics for bacterial sinus infection, and surgery for selected cases of large polyps, severe septal deviation or obstructive adenoids. These measures are useful, especially for short-term relief and for severe structural problems.

Their limitation is that symptoms often return once medicines are stopped, because the tendency behind the problem, such as allergy, repeated infections or recurrent polyp growth, remains. Decongestant sprays used for more than a few days can also cause rebound blockage. This is why many patients look for an approach that works on the underlying susceptibility.

How homeopathy approaches post nasal drip

In homeopathy, post nasal drip is seen as a local expression of a wider tendency, for example allergic sensitivity, a tendency to catch colds easily or a tendency to form polyps. The aim of homeopathic treatment for post nasal drip is to reduce this underlying susceptibility so that mucus production, sinus inflammation and recurrent episodes settle over time, without surgery. The prescription is individualised and is based on:

  • Character of the mucus: thin and watery, thick and ropy, yellow-green, clear like egg-white, bland or burning
  • Timing and triggers: worse in the morning, at night, in cold air, in a warm room, after dust or season change
  • Associated complaints: sinus headache, blocked nose, loss of smell, cough, snoring, ear blockage, acidity
  • History: repeated colds, allergy, asthma or eczema in the family, past sinus surgery or long-term steroid use
  • General constitution: sensitivity to heat or cold, thirst, appetite, sleep, perspiration and energy
  • Mind and emotions: stress, anxiety and temperament, which often influence recurrence

At Paras Homeopathy, the full case history is taken before treatment begins, so that the cause (allergy, sinusitis, polyps, adenoids or reflux) and the person’s constitution are both considered.

Homeopathic medicines commonly considered

The medicines below are among those frequently used for post nasal drip in clinical practice. They are listed to show how individualisation works, not as a self-treatment list.

Kali bichromicum

Thick, sticky, stringy, yellow-green mucus that drips from the back of the nose and is hard to clear. Pressure at the root of the nose, sinus headache in small spots and crusts in the nose are typical. Often considered in chronic sinusitis.

Hydrastis canadensis

Thick, yellowish mucus that constantly drops from the back of the nose into the throat, with frequent hawking and a raw throat. Commonly considered in long-standing catarrh with weakness and poor appetite.

Pulsatilla

Bland, thick, yellow-green mucus, a blocked nose in a warm room that opens in open air, loss of smell and taste, and a changeable mood. Often considered in children and in people who feel better in fresh air.

Natrum muriaticum

Clear, egg-white-like mucus with sneezing, loss of smell and taste, and dryness of the lips. Often considered in allergic post nasal drip in reserved, sensitive people.

Teucrium marum and Lemna minor

Medicines traditionally considered in nasal polyps, with a blocked nose, crusts, loss of smell and post nasal drip. They are often used alongside a constitutional medicine.

Calcarea phosphorica and Agraphis nutans

Considered in children with enlarged adenoids, mouth breathing, snoring and frequent colds, chosen according to the child’s overall constitution and growth pattern.

Other medicines in the materia medica

Depending on the case, Corallium rubrum, Sanguinaria, Mercurius solubilis, Silicea, Sepia or a deep-acting constitutional medicine may be considered.

Please do not self-medicate. Several of these medicines suit very different people, and a growth or long-standing blockage in the nose should first be examined. A qualified homeopathic physician should take the full case, confirm the cause and follow the response.

What does the research say?

An honest picture matters. The evidence for homeopathy in general is debated, and large reviews, including the 2015 report of Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council, did not find reliable evidence that homeopathy works better than placebo across conditions. Research specifically on homeopathy for chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis includes some small trials and observational studies with encouraging results, but larger, well-designed studies are still needed.

In practice we record symptoms at every visit, such as frequency of throat clearing, night cough, nasal blockage and number of colds, and we refer for ENT examination, imaging or surgery when the situation calls for it. This lets patient and doctor judge the response objectively.

How long does treatment take?

Duration depends on the cause, how long the problem has been present, previous treatments and general health. As a general guide from clinical experience:

  • First 2–4 weeks: throat clearing, night cough and morning soreness usually begin to ease.
  • 1–3 months: mucus becomes thinner and less, the nose breathes more freely and colds become less frequent.
  • 3–6 months or longer: in chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps and enlarged adenoids, treatment is continued to reduce recurrence.

Results vary from person to person. Large polyps causing complete blockage, or adenoids causing breathing pauses in sleep, may need ENT treatment alongside homeopathy.

Home care tips that help

  • Drink warm water through the day to keep mucus thin.
  • Steam inhalation once or twice a day, and saline nasal rinses to clear mucus.
  • Sleep with the head slightly raised to reduce night-time dripping and cough.
  • Avoid known triggers: dust, smoke, strong perfumes, very cold drinks and sudden temperature changes.
  • Keep bedding clean and wash pillow covers weekly to reduce dust mites.
  • Avoid late heavy dinners and spicy, oily food if you also have acidity.
  • Do not overuse decongestant nasal sprays beyond a few days.
  • Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.

Warning signs: see a doctor promptly

Most post nasal drip is harmless, but please seek medical assessment without delay if you notice:

  • High fever, severe facial pain or swelling around the eyes
  • Blood in the mucus, or a blocked nose on one side only that keeps getting worse
  • Breathlessness, wheezing or chest pain
  • A cough lasting more than eight weeks, weight loss or night sweats
  • Difficulty swallowing or a persistent hoarse voice
  • In children, loud snoring with pauses in breathing during sleep

Frequently asked questions

Can homeopathy treat post nasal drip without surgery?

In many patients, yes. Individualised homeopathic treatment aims to reduce the underlying allergy, sinus inflammation or tendency to polyps, so that mucus, throat clearing and cough settle over time without surgery. Results vary, and large obstructing polyps or adenoids may still need ENT treatment.

What is the root cause of post nasal drip?

The most common causes are allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps or swollen turbinates, and enlarged adenoids in children. Viral colds, a deviated septum, acid reflux, dry air, smoking and some medicines can also cause or worsen it.

Why is post nasal drip worse at night?

When you lie down, mucus collects at the back of the throat instead of being swallowed regularly. This triggers coughing and throat clearing at night and soreness in the morning. Sleeping with the head slightly raised and drinking warm water before bed can help.

Can enlarged adenoids cause post nasal drip in children?

Yes. Large adenoids block the back of the nose, so mucus collects and drips into the throat, causing night cough, mouth breathing and snoring. Homeopathic treatment is commonly used for children with recurrent colds and adenoid enlargement, with ENT review when there are breathing pauses in sleep.

Is post nasal drip dangerous?

Usually not, but it can greatly affect sleep, voice and quality of life. See a doctor promptly if there is high fever, blood in the mucus, one-sided blockage, breathlessness, or a cough lasting more than eight weeks.

How long does homeopathic treatment for post nasal drip take?

Many patients notice less throat clearing and night cough within two to four weeks. Chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps and adenoids usually need three to six months of treatment or longer, depending on how long the problem has been present.

Can I consult online for post nasal drip?

Yes. You can consult Dr. Ramdeo Lamoria by video or phone from anywhere in India or abroad. Previous reports such as CT scans or endoscopy findings can be shared securely, and medicines are couriered to your home.
